Daily Market Update: December 5, 2024

BTC is currently trading around $103,300 and ETH around $3,950.  Notable gainers in the last 24 hours are JASMY, SUI, and HYPE. The global crypto market cap is $3.89T, up 4.3% over the last day.  DeFi Total Value Locked is ~$132b and BTC dominance is around 57%.

In a monumental accomplishment, Bitcoin broke $100,000 for the first time today, surpassing the important psychological level and ultimately touching as high as $103,679.  In addition, its market cap surpassed $2T for the first time.  While it remains the world’s seventh largest asset, it is now hot on the heels of both Google and Amazon.  Lastly, Bitcoin garnered attention from key leaders, with Trump congratulating Bitcoiners on reaching the $100,000 milestone, US Fed Chair Powell stating that Bitcoin is digital gold, and Russian President Putin saying that Bitcoin is unstoppable.

Notable news includes: Trump nominated former SEC Commissioner and crypto supporter Paul Atkins to lead the SEC; US Congressman French Hill vowed to probe the debanking of crypto companies; the Philippines Central Bank completed a wholesale CBDC test; Mt Gox transferred $2.8b of BTC to an unknown wallet; Google searches for the term ‘altcoins’ hit a record high; crypto founders comprised nearly a third of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list; BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF IBIT hit $50b in holdings in record time; miner BitFuFu launched a private label mining pool; miner Hut 8 launched a $500m ATM equity issuance program with part of the proceeds to be used to buy Bitcoin; Nasdaq-listed maker of pickup truck accessories Worksport announced it will invest up to 10% of its treasury into Bitcoin and XRP; Canadian holding company Sol Strategies announced the acquisition of three validator companies; Canadian fintech firm Nuvei launched a blockchain payments solution in LATAM; custodian BitGo spoke with regulators regarding a potential expansion to India; Ripple clarified its RLUSD stablecoin isn’t launching today; and, Cardano layer 2 solution Hydra reached 1m TPS during a testnet simulation.
